28th December 1999 EXTREEM CD Released on BIRDMAN Records Birdman Records of Japan have released the Extreem CD. This was officially licenced from Pete Boot & The Extreem. Featuring all the known Extreem tracks including the outrageously rare Acetate only tracks from 1970, the first single from 1967 and two tracks recorded by the reunited Extreem in 1998 specially for this release!
Sabre Dance's Takahiko Togano is the man behind Birdman Records. So please show your support and buy this excellent CD. I provided some sleeve notes and acted as liason between Takahiko and the band. If this release is successful expect more rare and excellent releases on Birdman Records to follow...

Visit BIRDMAN RECORDS
Note: This is a must get CD! Get em' before they are gone! Detailed Review to follow!

3rd October 1999 BUDGIE - New Releases planned! The Budgie Manager called last week to discuss two new Budgie Releases that are in the pipework!
Best Of BUDGIE (From the Active/ RCA years) This will almost certainly be along the lines of the recent Half Moon Best of BUDGIE release. More of a budget release to intice casual fans to buy it. I did ask about bonus previously unreleased tracks. However at this stage it appears that sadly there will be none. I will keep trying to convince them of the potential benefits of including at least one bonus track for the fans!

BUDGIE - The Unreleased Rockfield Tapes This is probably the release that many fans have been waiting for! There exists in the Rockfield archives (I've seen the reel to reel tapes when I visited Rockfield studios in 1997!) over one hour of completely unheard BUDGIE material from 1983 - 1986. The current plan is to make up a CD release with the best material from those tapes. The majority of the music dates from 1983 from the planned fourth RCA album (the sequel to 'Deliver Us From Evil'). I have heard rough tapes of some of this stuff and it's less commercial than 'Deliver Us..', more in the vain of 'Power Supply' & 'Nightflight'. Tracks to be featured would include 'Rock Your Blood', 'Sweet Fast Talker', 'Nut Bush City Limits' (The shelved single from 1981!) plus much more! I will keep you all updated with the latest news of this project!
Note: In both cases the above titles are not the planned titles!

26th June 1999 BUDGIE - Letchworth & Sweden Rock Festival Reports For all the pictures and full details of these two events please check out our new feature page BUDGIE - Live in Europe '99
25th May 1999 LION ROARS IN WILLENHALL If Friday night 28th May is the night for BUDGIE fans to be in Letchworth then Saturday night 29th May is the night for BUDGIE fans to be in Willenhall. Pete Boot's LION will be playing at the Shakespere in Willenhall and original BUDGIE drummer Ray Phillips will be there along with original Judas Priest bassist Bruno Stapenhill (who will jam with LION). Should be a great night!
23rd May 1999 BUDGIE Rehearsals I spoke with John Thomas on Friday 21st May... JT told me that the band had been rehearsing since mid May. "..it sounds like BUDGIE!!" was JT's comment! Apparently Steve is in fine form! After Letchworth the band will have two more rehearsals before heading of to Sweden for their appearance on June 12th in Solvesborg at the Sweden Festival.
19th May 1999 BUDGIE in Letchworth - Concert program finalised!

Thanks to Ray Cordell for flyer scans
As of Wednesday 19th May tickets are selling very fast! There are fans coming from Holland, Belguim, France & Ireland. If you want to come to this gig order your tickets now! No ticket, no entry! Once the 400 tickets are gone that is it! I believe there are only about 100 left!

07th May 1999 BUDGIE in Letchworth - The Official Gig Flyer & Press release! Check out the Official Letchworth Gig Flyer and Letchworth Press release!
03rd May 1999 BUDGIE in Letchworth - An Update! Sabre Dance members attending the BUDGIE gig in Letchworth are all invited to the VIP area after the gig for an informal meeting with the guys from BUDGIE. (NOTE: This is subject to numbers! WE WILL DO OUR BEST - Simon 19/05/99) This will be by invitation only and the area is reserved for friends of the band! Any current Sabre Dance members attending bring along ID and make yourself known to Axel, Mark Grehan or myself and we'll try and organize a pass for you! The band will be hanging around for about an hour after the gig and will be happy to mingle with fans & friends. It may be hard to meet the band before the gig, so this will be your best bet! At the very least the Budgie Manager & I will get your albums signed for you! BUDGIE will hit the stage at Letchworth about 10:00pm and play a 75 - 90 minute set. (The fans will need to ensure it's 90 minutes!!) The above information was confirmed by Paul Cox on Sunday 2nd May.
02nd May 1999 Running order for Sweden Festival Announced! BUDGIE open the main stage on day two of the Festival, Saturday 12th June at 3pm. BUDGIE will play a 75 min 'Best Of Budgie' set, somewhat similar to the set played in 1996!
01st May 1999 BUDGIE - Tickets for Letchworth on Sale 1st May! Just got this email from the Letchworth promoter Ray Cordell, "...Tickets for the UK show at Plinston Hall, Letchworth go on sale as from this Saturday, 1st May. Contact the Plinston Box Office on (01462) 480282. There appears to be huge interest so I would encourage the web site readers to get in early." The venue only holds around 400, so get in quickly! Tickets are £16.00 each, a bargin to see the original 80's BUDGIE line-up! NOTE: From BUDGIE Manager Paul Cox NO VIDEO CAMERA'S or TAPE RECORDERS ALLOWED! Anyone breeching the rules will be swiftly ejected - BE WARNED! NORMAL CAMERA'S are Fine!
30th April 1999 BUDGIE - LIVE GIGS IN 1999! BUDGIE will be returning to the stage, not once but twice within two weeks! BUDGIE will be appearing at the Sweden Rock Festival, Solvesborg, Sweden on Saturday 12th June 1999. For more details please visit our BUDGIE gig page
Prior to their appearance in Sweden, BUDGIE will be making a welcome return to the Live stage in England, with a warm up gig at the very intimate 400 capacity Plinston Hall. This will be BUDGIE's first UK gig since Nottingham, back in May 1988. It will also mark Steve Williams first gig with Budgie since 1986! Plinston Hall is in Letchworth, Herts, just north of London, England. Be there on Friday 28th May 1999 or you may just live to regret it!

29th March 1999 BUDGIE - WILL NOT APPEAR AT SWEDISH FESTIVAL I spoke with BUDGIE Manager Paul Cox last night! BUDGIE will not be appearing at the Sweden Rock Festival. It would appear the promoter has jumped the gun. I apologize to any fans who I gave false hope or a heart attack to! If you want to hear any BUDGIE songs live this year in the UK my suggestion to you is to check out Ray Phillip's SIX TON BUDGIE and Pete Boot's LION. 28th March 1999 BUDGIE - LIVE IN SWEDEN? It now appears that BUDGIE will infact be returning to live action this year after all! I passed on the details of a Swedish Rock Festival to the BUDGIE Manager a few weeks back, and it appears that the band have secured an appearance. BUDGIE look set to appear along side Festival headliners Deep Purple, DIO and the newly reformed Captain Beyond (Legendary Progressive Rock Band) on Saturday 12th June 1999 at the Sweden Rock Festival, Solvesborg, Sweden. The two day festival also features The Scorpions, Mercyful Fate, Manowar, Canned Heat plus some lesser known bands. Certainly an interesting line-up! For more details please refer to the BUDGIE MESSAGE BOARD which is updated regularly with more detailed information. Also questions can be answered. 14th March 1999 BUDGIE US GIGS..Delayed???? I spoke to John Thomas on Saturday 13th March. It would sadly appear that the planned Budgie US gigs may not eventuate at all. The Manager has mentioned the possibility of September, but JT wasn't too confident about this! For more details check out the BUDGIE Message Board! 14th March 1999 RAY PHILLIPS..hits the big 50! Many happy returns to Ray Phillips who turned 50 on March 1st! To look at Ray you wouldn't think he was 50! He also doesn't play drums like any 50 year old I know! All the best mate! 14th March 1999 Six Ton Budgie - New Guitarist! I have just spoken with Ray Phillips (13th March 1999). Six Ton Budgie have a new guitarist in Birmingham musician 'Melvin Hancox'. Melvin is well known to a few of us older fans. Melvin is a long time Budgie fan and even auditioned for Tredegar way back in the late 80's (he was very young then). Now I have heard some demos this guy made back in about 1988 and he has those Budgie riffs sounding so like Tony Bourge it is frightening! Currently Melvin is working with Ray on tracks for the third Six Ton Budgie CD. Justin Phillips has left to persue his own musical projects (it was only a matter of time before he had to find his own way!). He has contributed guitar on at least one track for the new Six Ton Budgie CD. Justin is currently gigging quite heavily in Sth Wales as part of a two man outfit. More details when I get them. Hopefully Six Ton Budgie will commence live rehearsals shortly for a couple of gigs in early - mid June of this year. Details when they are confirmed! For latest updates always check out the Message Board! 21st February 1999 BUDGIE US GIGS..Delayed until June! BUDGIE'S three planned April US gigs have been delayed until June. For more details check out the BUDGIE Message Board! 25th December 1998 BUDGIE GIGS IN USA 1999? BUDGIE are preparing to return to action for a few shows in the USA during Spring 1999. San Antonio, Texas is currently being organised and the band need to play 2 or 3 other shows to make the trip worthwhile. Any interested US Promoters please email me and I'll pass you onto the Budgie Manager who is contactable via phone & fax. FURTHER NEWS TO FOLLOW, AS IT BECOMES AVAILABLE! 20th December 1998 DENNY & COLIN BURGESS IN SERIOUS CAR ACCIDENT Denny & Colin Burgess, former Bombshell & George Hatcher Band bassist & drummer respectively were involved in a serious car accident in Sydney in mid November. I had just received an invite to the Australian CD Launch of 'Adults Only', their debut CD for their new group GOOD TIME CHARLIE. The invite was delayed due to being redirected from my old Bundoora address. On the very night I open the invite I received emails from Denny's sister-in-law and Karin Keays (wife of Jim Keays, the Masters Apprentices vocalist) telling me of the accident. Colin is in a critical condition with internal injuries and Denny is slowly recovering from serious injuries. The accident happened after they left the CD Launch which incidentally included a headline performance from Good Time Charlie. The driver of their car did a u-turn in front of a semi-trailer and the guys sitting in the back got the full force of impact. I had actually interviewed Denny back in early 1995 for Sabre Dance. It was a very interesting interview, but because of the Budgie reformation in April 1995 etc has yet to be featured. I thought what a nice guy he was (JT & Denny were best mates back in the late 70's, and JT had told me he was a top guy!). I had never met Colin but had seen him perform with a reformed Masters Apprentices in both 1988 and 1996. On behalf of all Sabre Dance members I wish both Denny & Colin a very swift recovery. All the very best for the future. Simon Wilson, Sabre Dance 11th December 1998 NEW BUDGIE BOOTLEG CD 'BREADFUNSY' RELEASED IN JAPAN I don't know what the hell is happening, but a new Budgie Bootleg has been released in Japan on the GYPSY EYE label. Entitled "Breadfunsy" it features recordings from London, England 08/02/75 and as a bonus the never before heard (yeah right!) 1972 BBC recording. As soon as I get this sucker I'll post a review on the BOOTLEG page. Thanks to Taka for the information! 10th December 1998 NEW BUDGIE BOOTLEG CDR RELEASED IN THE UK Apparently a new Budgie Bootleg CDR featuring the entire radio broadcast from the Global Village, London, England 09/03/74 has been released. I haven't seen or heard this as yet. For my comments on this matter see the Bootlegs page. 3rd December 1998 MAJOR LANCE CD featuring JT Released Major Lance - Live at the Torch has been released on CD in the UK. This legendary album recorded at The Golden Torch, Tunstell, Stoke On Trent, England in late 1972 features none other than John 'JT' Thomas on guitar. It was actually the first album John ever featured on. In a review at the time, the guitarist is described as sounding like Godzilla stomping through the back bar! Major Lance by the way is a Soul artist! Yes Soul! The album is available on the net at a number of sites. When I get a copy I'll feature it!
Live At The Torch CDXELV1 Released UK 1998
27th October 1998 SIX TON BUDGIE MORE GIG DETAILS Six Ton Budgie will also be playing a gig on December 5th at the Brown Jack in Wroughton, England (a favourite venue). Check out Axel's site for further details! AXEL'S NEWS PAGE
20th October 1998 SIX TON BUDGIE GIG DETAILS Six Ton Budgie play their first gig for yonks with Welsh rock legends Man on Sunday 13th December 1998. The venue is the Blackwood Miners Institute in Blackwood, Sth Wales. Tredegar played this venue on many occasions in the 80's. For further details check out the gig guide at the Peppermint Iguana site. I believe these guys are promoting the gig. Note: It is listed that Budgie are playing, this is incorrect it is actually Six Ton Budgie. Get along and see the band, should be a great night with Man on the bill as well. Wish I could be there! Ah sigh!
Six Ton Budgie Gig Details at Iguana
4th October 1998 Superclarkes Guitarist to Tour Japan in November 1998 Superclarkes guitarist Tich Gwilym is playing in Japan with Welsh folk singer Sian James. As part of the annual Celtic music festival Sian James will perform three shows in Tokyo, Japan in early November. Tich will be part of her backing band. The Tour dates are; Monday 2nd November - Club Code, Shunjuku, Tokyo, Japan Tuesday 3rd November - Club Code, Shunjuku, Tokyo, Japan Wednesday 4th November - Venue TBA 'Celtic Calin', Tokyo, Japan Takahiko Togano will be there to report all the details. I may just be joining him. I have always wanted to goto Japan and I need a holiday! Tich is probably best known to Budgie fans as the guitarist that played with Burke Shelley in the original line-up of The Superclarkes back in 1989 - 1991. However Tich is somewhat of a guitar legend in Wales, playing with Progressive rockers KIMLA TAZ in the late 60's (Paul Chapman of UFO was also a member) and a host of other bands. Tony Bourge recommended that I go and see the guitarist from The Superclarkes "..He's very good!..". I went along and saw the band in November 1991 and I wasn't disappointed. He reminds me a little of Tony TS McPhee. For full details check out Takahiko's Sabre Dance Japan Site
18th August 1998 New BUDGIE Live CD confirmed Paul Cox (Budgie Manager) confirmed that the next Budgie CD to be released will be the "Live in San Antonio, Texas" recorded at the 1995 La Semana Alegre festival show. At this stage it's not clear if the release will be a double CD (hence featuring the entire 100 minute plus performance) or a single CD with the choice cuts. It is likely that the release should hit the shelves in Dec 98/ Jan 99. Further information will be posted when I have more details. Oh and don't be surprised if the old bird stretches it's wings for some action around Easter next year. Remember you read it here first! 21st July 1998 Six Ton Budgie - The third Album Update I spoke to Ray Phillips via the phone on Sunday 19th July 1998. We discussed a number of issues including the planned third Six Ton Budgie album. It would appear unlikely that the album will be able to be recorded "Live". Ray just hasn't got all the necessary technology in his home studio. Ray discussed some of the planned tracks, which will definitely include the following two Budgie classics "Crash Course In Brain Surgery" and "Hot As A Dockers Armpit". I think he found it quite amusing that "Zoom Club" was heading the poll set up by Axel (refer Axel's Budgie & Six Ton Budgie site - to vote for your fave Budgie covers!). Ray had received his complimentary copy of HEAVIER THAN AIR from Budgie Manager Paul Cox and was rather pleased with the result, especially the photo of the band from the Marquee 1973. I think he was really quite surprised to see all the photo's of all the line-ups after the AN ECSTASY OF FUMBLING fiasco! 16th July 1998 Possible Live shows - Sorry Bad news! I spoke with both Paul Cox (Budgie Manager) and John Thomas recently and unfortunately there are currently no plans for any Budgie concerts. There was some talk about playing a handful of dates in Los Angeles, Allentown and a major outdoor gig in San Antonio, however this sadly has not come to fruition. Lets hope the Sunken gardens performance in San Antonio on August 24th 1996 is not the last ever show by Budgie. We will bring you any news on possible concerts as soon as we are informed about them. The Sabre Dance team. 11th July 1998 'Heavier Than Air' has reached Australia. Check out the "Heavier Than Air Review page". Speaking with Budgie fans, it seems this is the CD we have all been waiting for! Ron Levine was lost for words in his email to me and Takahiko was pretty happy! 7th July 1998 The new BUDGIE 2CD set 'Heavier Than Air' has been released in the UK, USA and Japan. Living in Australia I haven't received my copy yet. Until I get a scan of the CD up and feature all the details, check out Axel's site. Axel has a scan up of the cover. 19th June 1998 The new BUDGIE live 2CD set 'Heavier Than Air' will be released in the USA at the end of June. In the next few days I will post the complete track listing with full details of venue's and dates for the material. I helped to compile this release with Paul Cox the Budgie Manager. I am sure that all fans will enjoy the material. The tracks from the Global Village, London from early 1974 are magic. I'm yet to hear the previously unreleased John Peel session featuring The Author (Can't wait!) 27th April 1998 A new BUDGIE 2CD set is due for release in June. It will feature live material from the Tony Bourge Budgie era incl the famous BBC studio performance from October 1972. Stay tuned for further details...
